A City Founded on the Riverbank
Christian Clemens platted Mount Clemens in 1818 at what was then known as "High Banks" or "Big Springs" along the river, the same year Macomb County was established with the city as its seat. From the earliest settlement through the mid-1900s, the Clinton River shaped the city's development directly -- residents fished, hunted, and trapped along its banks, and boat-building and repair businesses operated along the riverfront.
A Downtown With Direct River Exposure
Because Mount Clemens' historic downtown core was built directly along the Clinton River, properties there carry more direct flood exposure during high water than communities set farther from the riverbank, and a water-damage response should factor in current river conditions alongside the property's own condition.
