A Town Built Around a Canal That Failed
Utica traces to 1817, but its most consequential chapter came with the Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal, projected and partially built starting in 1837 directly along the Clinton River through town. The speculative 1838 boom that came with it -- a bank chartered, a hotel built -- collapsed within about a year when the canal went bankrupt, but the town's proximity to the river it was built around never changed.

Because Utica's original core sits directly along the Clinton River, properties near the historic downtown carry more direct flood exposure during heavy rain or spring snowmelt than homes set farther back, and water damage response there should start with the river's current level and recent rainfall.
